ONE LOVE - ASSOCIATION TO PROMOTE EPILEPSY RESEARCH
We look forward to your support:

One Love.

Association for the Advancement of Epilepsy-Research
.

The Association „One Love“ is a non profit organisation with international connections and based in Austria. “One Love“ is dedicated to the research and therapy of epilepsy.
Our goal is to attain new understanding about the illness and by means of this alleviating the illness. Therefore enabling independent research projects in national and international areas.

FOCUS

Using evidence based research we wish to enable the implementation of new therapy possibilities.

AIMS

Our goal is, by using new medical information, to alleviate the illness and to improve the health of those affected.

Our Focus

Our priority lies within research

Many research areas associated with epilepsy, have not been given until now the necessary recognition. Therefore we wish to implement evidence based research projects in order to confront the themes whereby eventually the implementation of new therapy possibilities is realised.

Our Goal

We have a goal and various fields of activity

Focus of the Association is to use new medical information, to alleviate the illness and to improve the health of those affected.

  • Facilitate research and medical doctrine in the sector of epilepsy
  • Implementation of scientifc findings into practice

  • Connecting with international level researchers

  • Patients to be supported charitably

What can you do

In order to reach our goals, we are dependant on your support. There are many ways in which you can help:

    • donate online (siehe Spendenbutton) or in the usual way:
      IBAN: AT16 3304 8000 0000 6098, BIC: RLBBAT2E048
    • buy at Shop++ via our Association
    • inform others about us, get in contact with us
    • connect with us on Facebook
    • keep informed of new information and events of „One Love“
    • collect donations within family and friends, e.g. Christmas, partys
    • support us with personal involvement
    • become involved, become a member – registration- form click here

Thank you for your support!

The story behind one love

The Association was founded in spring 2014 by Bernhard and Gabriele Rohrbeck.
Gabriele has suffered for more than 30 years from epilepsy – about 2 times a week
she has Grand Mal seizures. Medical therapy with medication can not lower the incidence of attacks without serious side effects.

Searching for treatment possibilities, in 2013 Bernhard stumbled upon a scientific study which examined the effect of CO2 on epileptic seizures. And in actuality the application of Carbogen can reduce the intensity of seizures. In order for this connection to be researched more closely and possibly even develop new therapeutic approaches and as a result the couple founded the association. The name „One Love“ was decided upon for personal reasons and at the same time motivation for the constant search for new solutions.

Short circuit in the brain

Epilepsy, by definition a neurological illness, manifests itself through cramp attacks and
 unconsciousness.

Concurrently with the seizures a higher risk of injuries and cognitive disturbances and depression appear. Possible further after-effects such as uneployment and isolation may ensue.

By an epileptic attack many affected people lose consciousness and suffer cramps which can occur all over the body. That happens because neurons are discharged like a short circuit in the brain.

Incidence rate

Approximately 5 percent of the world population suffer an attack at least once in their life time.
Approximately 1 percent will develop repeated attacks thus named epilepsy. In Austria 80.000 people are affected by epilepsy.

1%

Of the population suffers from epilepsy over 80.000 people are affected in austria

Causes

The causes of epilepsy are extensive and to this day not fully understood.

Damage, tumours or disfunction in certain areas of the brain or inherited traits
can be responsible. Sometimes there is absolutely no definite reason identifiable.

Treatment

An epileptic patient cannot always be helped.

The treatment of epilepsy is most commonly:

  • medication

  • surgery

  • by vagus-nerve stimulation

  • ways of diet, e.g. ketogenic diet

Not all epileptic patients can be successfully treated. They belong to a therapy resistant category.
Approx. 20 – 40 % of the patients are medication resistant.

With certain patients surgical intervention can help e.g. healing or improvement,
provided that the definite area in the brain could be identified.

Research

Evidence based on empirically supported medicine is accepted in research and health political area as the most important criterium. Therefore we wish to expand this area which until now has not been widely enough researched and contribute to independent research.

Topics of research

The assumption exists, that Carbogen can disrupt epileptic seizures. For medicine, to be able to use this method, more extensive medical studies are necessary. Our goal: research of the effects from Carbogen on a seizure and to eliminate any dangers and to reach a deeper understanding of seizure complexity.

These studies serve also to develop a new method for First Aid application in epileptic seizures.

Possible further themes can be found in the UKERN list.

Networking

A further important part of the duties of the organisation „One Love“ is to contribute to collaboration between researches in the area of epilepsy. This includes the networking of research support on a European level – Horizon 2020.
